Self-Talk
Guiding Yourself toward Greatness
If you (20-40 yr old, reasonably fit, average height, average weight individual) and I were to attend a pro golf event. There would not be a sharp physical difference between those featured inside the ropes and the fans surrounding. If you and I showed up to the NCAA D1 Gymnastics finals, there would be. Or perhaps you and I attended the NCAA Basketball Final Four, or the NCAA Football National Championships. Under no circumstances but a kicker and perhaps a very small point guard would we compare physically to anyone on the floor.
Some find it rather difficult to discern what PGA tour pro’s do so well. There are some obvious signs: 300-330 yard drives, compression rates that make a sound that most dream of, seemingly never a miss of a putt inside 15 feet, even a magic bag of short game shots that nearly none of us understand the physics of.
All that being said, these four characteristics are present fully on secondary tours, these four characteristics are present in most levels of college golf, I’ve even seen these four presented in elite Mid-Am golf. Well, what is the difference then? If a 36-year-old insurance salesman can present all four of these characteristics, why on earth is he miles away from getting his card? What is the key difference?
A lot of the difference stems from one thing, self-talk.
